The Society of The Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick is a private organization dedicated to the principles of brotherhood, charity and community service. Since the founding of the organization in 1771, the society has maintained a tradition of openness to Irish as well as non-Irish men of goodwill, without regard to ethnic or religious origin. The Cincinnati Chapter was established in 1868. Given the rich musical tradition which is a cornerstone of the Irish Culture, the evolution of a musical group within the Society was inevitable. The New York Society, with the help of Victor Herbert (a Dublin native) had established its Glee Club in 1913, and the Cincinnati Chapter followed suit in 1985. Over the past twenty eight years, the Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick Cincinnati Glee Club has presented hundreds of benefit and/or goodwill performances throughout the community. The musical fare always includes a generous number of popular and traditional Irish songs, some of which were written/arranged by Victor Herbert himself, including "The Hail to the Friendly Sons." The sixty-some voices of the Glee Club are led by Choral Director Karl Thomsen.
